Entry #5: Allstate commercial

Allstate is an insurance company which sells auto, home, life, and business insurance. "Mayhem" is an ad campaign featuring actor Dean Winters as "Mr. Mayhem," a insane person who tries to cause as much chaos as possible. I want to analyze one of these ads, "Mayhem Bear" and how it effectively communicates the selling points of Allstate without explicitly explaining the positives of using Allstate over other insurance providers.

                                                           "Mayhem Bear," Would recommend watching

An example of how the ad communicates the selling points of Allstate is its context. In the ad, Mr. Mayhem acts as a bear which breaks into a car, creating comedy. This keeps the audience engaged while presenting a situation where having car insurance would be helpful (having your car broken into).

Furthermore, Dean Winters says, “Your cut rate car insurance might not pay for all this.” The quote throws shade toward other insurance companies by insinuating that they will not pay for the damage caused in the video. Then, Dean gets the viewer to consider Allstate as their insurance provider with the slogan, “Get Allstate and be better protected against mayhem, like me.” The slogan makes the viewer consider the situation presented in the video and the consequences if the viewer doesn’t have insurance; The shade thrown toward other insurance companies such as Progressive persuades the viewer to consider only Allstate and no other insurance companies.

The Mayhem ad campaign communicates the selling points of Allstate through its comedic scenario that is used to get the audience to consider the product and its application of ethos to destroy the credibility of other insurance companies and make the viewer consider Allstate only. I think that these types of ads are fun compared to many of the modern ads I see today. What are your thoughts on the landscape of advertisements today?

  1. Great job of pulling out some concrete examples from the ad to illustrate your points and anchor your analysis. You've got it!
